Maps are one of the key pieces of equipment you'll need to help you navigate successfully. Essentially they're diagramatic representations of the landscape which you can use to help you figure out where you are and how to get to where you want to be.
There are many different brands, styles, types and sizes of maps available on the market and which one you choose is dependent upon what you're using it for. Here in the UK the two most common brands of maps for use in the outdoors are Ordnance Survey and Harvey Maps. Each brand of map has it's own style and way of presenting you with the information required so it's important that you are familiar with the map you are using and what different things mean.
Map Symbols and Map Keys
Maps are covered in many different lines, colours and symbols each with a different meaning and understanding what each means is key to being able to translate the picture on the map to the real world and vice versa.
